Ashley & Andrew’s Transformers goth metal wedding

We’ve seen this rockin’ bride in a Monday Montage! Now we’ve got the full story of how she married her metal man.

The offbeat bride: Ashley, Retail Slave (and Tribe member)

Her offbeat partner: Andrew, Retail Slave #2

Date and location of wedding: La Vedette, Vaughan, Ontario — May 22, 2011

What made our wedding offbeat: Our wedding was tradition locked up in a straight jacket. Andrew’s family is very traditional Catholic and we received some raised eyebrows when we said our wedding would not take place in a church, that there would be a hearse, photos would be in a cemetery, and the theme would most definitely be goth. We wanted something that reflected who we were as a couple.

We decided to suprise our friends and family by entering to the Transformers theme song from the ’80s. I wore a Bumblebee mask and Andrew wore an Optimus Prime mask. We then had a battle in the middle of the dance floor.

Tell us about the ceremony: Our ceremony was personal, short, and sweet. We talked about zombies and our love. Andrew played “Follow the Map” by Mono on the guitar as I walked down the aisle.

I was walked down the aisle by my best friend Rachel, who wore a Tim Burton pin. As we exited our ceremony, we had the theme from Hellraiser played, since we are massive horror fans.

Our biggest challenge: The biggest challenge was getting some of our family members to approve of our choices. Some of the issues ranged from not being traditional or religious in our ceremony, to what music was going to be played at the reception. In the end, it worked out because everyone knew that this is how we envisioned our wedding.

My favorite moment: Carrying my grandfather’s cowboy hat down the aisle. He could not be there since he was sick. But carrying his hat (which was his trademark) made it feel like he was with me. He passed away two days after our wedding. It meant so much to me knowing that he knew his granddaughter was happy with an amazing man.

My funniest moment: One of the funniest moments was at the rehearsal. My stepmother traveled from work and did not have enough time to stop to use the restroom. Once she showed up at the venue to rehearse, she really had to go. We could not find the light switch for the washroom, so I had to use the light from my phone to guide her into a stall. I walked into walls and she almost fell into the toilet.

Was there anything you were sure was going to be a total disaster that unexpectedly turned out great? Having some of my family members meet for the first time. My parents are separated and have been for years. They are both remarried now but I was really nervous a war might break out. It wasn’t a huge worry, but the thought was still at the back of my head.

My advice for offbeat brides: Be you and nothing less. You can play metal and have people headbang for hours! You can’t make everyone happy.
