The toast of the town, London Town this Friday? Presumably, the Royal family will serve Pol Roger, a champagne began in 1849 in Epernay, France, that went on to become the toast of London, Great Britian and the rest of the Continent.
Prince Charles opted for this popular champagne at the seated luncheon at Buckingham Palace for 300 invited guests.
Thirsty they will be, after a mornings jaunt to Westminister and onto Buckingham Palace!
Is this a state secret? Decanter, a UK wine magazine says they have it on the highest authority that the family has chosen this family owned winery, and specifically requested a non-vintage.
Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth IIs first Prime Minister, favored the bubbly, and upon his death in 1965, the firm shipped the to bottles to Britain with a black-border label.
Pol Roger winery also created a wine in his honor, a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay styled with the stateman in mind: robust and mature!
For the modern Royal Family: Champagne is a champagne, is a champagne. If their tastes are haute, then they will go up a notch in price, prestige and presentation.
The Brut Reserve Non-Vintage, is the top of the line. The winery says that it is dominated by white flowers, green apple, brioche, and a trace of minerality on the nose.
On the palate, the notes are stone fruits, nuttiness, and a hint of honey. It is well suited for fish and spicy dishes.
The Rich Non-Vintage is sweeter than semi-dry champagne yet retains the same characteristics as the Brut Reserve
Hark! Pol Roger received the Royal Warrant, which means it has the royal stamp of approval as a purveyor from the Queen in 1994. Hip, Hip hurray!
However, Bollinger won hands down by Prince Charles for his stag party and the ceremony. Times do change.
Before you bolt for the door, Pol Roger is available in the UK, Belguim, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Australia. Notably, there is not a drop in the US.
So, lets toast Prince William, Kate Middleton and their families. The Best of luck, and life!
