The Many Wedding Dresses of Elizabeth Taylor—A Retrospective

Dame Elizabeth Taylor was almost as famous for her many marriages as she was for those violet eyes.

I am a very committed wife, Taylor once joked. And I should be committed, toofor being married so many times.

Here, a look back at eight gorgeous wedding daysand one fictional one.

Father of the Bride, 1950

This picture, taken just months before Lizs first trip down the aisle, shows her as the star of the original Father of the Bride. The film was released a month after her first wedding.

Husband No. 1: Conrad Nicky Hilton

Liz tied the knot with Paris Hiltons great-uncle on May 6, 1950. She wore a $1,500 satin wedding gown, according to BRIDEfinds. The pair were divorced the following January.

Husband No. 2: Michael Wilding

This was the second marriage for both Liz and British actor Michael Wilding. They were married on February 21, 1952she wore a modest suitand went on to have two sons, Michael and Christopher. They were divorced in January of 1957.

Husband No. 3: Michael Todd, the Spanish wedding

Liz and Michael Todd were first wed in an all-Spanish civil ceremony on February 3, 1957, in Spain. She wore this gorgeous off-the-shoulder number. It was the third marriage for both.

Husband No. 3: Michael Todd, the Mexican wedding

Liz donned a hooded gown when the pair held a second ceremony in Acapulco on March 8, 1957. Eddie Fisher, fourth to the right from Liz, served as best man; his wife, actress Debbie Reynolds, matron of honor, stands by his side. (Read what Debbie Reynolds had to say about Liz Taylor this morning.) Eddie and Debbie are Carrie Fishers mom and dad! Liz and Michaels daughter Liza was born in 1957.

Husband No. 4: Eddie Fisher

Yes, the same Eddie Fisher from two pictures up! Liz was widowed on March 22, 195853 years and one day ago todaywhen a cold kept her from flying with then-husband Michael Todd. The plane crashed, claiming Michaels life, and Liz famously ran to the arms of Michaels married friend Eddie Fisher for comfort. Eddie left his wife, Liz converted to Judaism, and the two were married on May 12, 1959, at Temple Beth Shalom in Las Vegas. Her green silk dress featured a hood and sheer sleeves. They divorced in 1964.

Husband No. 5: Richard Burton, take 1

Just nine days after splitting from Fisher, Liz said I do to Richard Burton, her co-star in Cleopatra, in yellow chiffon and a wild floral headdress. They were married for 10 yearsLizs longest marriagefrom 1964 to 1974, and adopted a daughter, Maria, in 1964.

Husband No. 6: Richard Burton, take 2

After a year and a half apart, Richard and Liz took a second shot at love. They tied the knot againshe wore flowers in her hair, againin October of 1975, and were divorced again the following July.

Husband No. 7: John Warner

With five failed marriages and one late husband behind her, Liz took her seventh walk down the aisle in December of 1976, this time with Republican politician John Warner. The picture above is NOT from their weddingit was taken about a month later. I couldnt track down any pictures of their wedding, but I didnt want to leave a big blank spot there! Liz and John were divorced in 1982.

Husband No. 8: Larry Fortensky

After taking almost a decade-long break from the messy business of marriage, Liz would wear a floor-length, off-the-shoulder gown to exchange vows for the last time, this time with construction worker Larry Fortensky. The pair were married at Michael Jacksons Neverland in October of 1991 and divorced just over five years later.

Elizabeth Taylor will remembered for so many things (Oh, the fashion!) but Im most impressed by her capacity to love and her overwhelming compassion, which meant tens of millions of dollars in charitable donations.

RIP, Dame Liz.

Which of Elizabeth Taylors wedding looks is your favorite?

Im swooning over that green dress!
