Spring Wedding Style Tips – Olga Vasilkova/Dreamstime.com Are you a guest at a May wedding? Wondering what to wear? Here are five items and styles you should consider including in your outfit.

Spring is the unofficial start of the wedding season, and there are few months that are more romantic than May. Here are five things female guests should think about when choosing their outfits for a May wedding.

Start with a Mid-Length Dress

A mid-length dress (to the knee or a little lower) is a safe choice for almost every type of wedding, from formal to casual. Something sleeveless with a higher neckline is a season-appropriate and highly versatile look. For more conservative church weddings, add a cardigan or shawl.

Incorporate Flowers

Real flowers are an elegant complement to a May wedding outfit. Work them into an updo such as a chignon or try the fake variety in the form of a headband or clip. A floral print dress is usually a safe bet for a spring wedding – just stay away from loud patterns.

Choose Bright Colours

Avoid dark, sombre colours like black, grey, and navy blue for any wedding, let alone one in the spring. For a May wedding, try something bold like yellow or cornflower blue. Just be careful with dresses in solid colours because they tend to be associated with bridesmaid dresses. If you can, check with the bride in advance on her colour scheme or risk being mistaken for a member of the wedding party. Alternatively, you can head off any potential awkwardness your sea-foam green gown may create by accessorizing with a printed cardigan or bolero.

Add Visual Interest

Try a dress with a ruffled neckline or gathered skirt for a spring wedding. Layered, floaty skirts are a good fit for a warm May day. If you’re going with a skirt or dress, you might also want to consider tights (white with a floral or diamond weave is a cute look and works well for a casual or semi-formal wedding). A belt is a great way to complete an outfit while creating a lean silhouette.

Be Tasteful

It may be tempting to choose a low-cut sundress or short skirt for an event in May, especially if the wedding says “casual attire,” but such styles are best avoided at weddings. You don’t want to be the guest who stands out because of a bad fashion decision. Also keep in mind that stilettos and lace-up sandals are best paired with a more conservative dress or pantsuit.

Keep these tips in mind when getting ready for a May wedding and you’ll be sure to look stylish and appropriate on the big day.
