It’s your wedding day and you want to look fabulous, and slightly different. There are many ways to distinguish your appearance, depending on the style and formality of your wedding, and the location. Read on for tips that stand out.
Should you opt to go barefoot for your wedding, people will be talking about it for ages. While a cathedral isn’t the place to try this, it can work for a beach wedding. (It’s much harder to do on grass or any place with floors.) Beaches are made for casual looks, and if you wear a simple dress and simple hairstyle, you can easily get away with the no-shoes choice. You can also have your groom do the same thing. Better yet, give your guests the option of taking their shoes off too, and provide flip-flops for walking to and from the setting.
Another option for beach or backyard weddings is sandals. If Versace and Prada make fashionable styles, they’re a-okay for a ceremony. Sandals have become more wedding-accessible as comfort has taken hold for ladies and gentlemen. Perfect for tall women who don’t want to overshadow their husbands, or for those of you who are uncomfortable in heels. One note: Get a manicure the day before your ceremony!
Speaking of feet, ankle bracelets are a popular wedding accessory, and show off gorgeous legs and beautiful shoes. They no longer carry the “hippie” taboo they once did, so take a look at the jewelry store selection. They can be simple and inexpensive or covered in jewels. A carefully revealed tattoo can work too, if it’s not too large and is located on, say, your shoulder or ankle. Once again, it’s not a great idea for a big, formal ceremony, but stands out for the casual affair.
Hair has taken, er, roots in simple styles, and if you’re going for a sweet, relaxed look it’s fine to wear your hair in a ponytail, or even braids. Barrettes have never lost their flair, and can be purchased in adorable colors and styles. Do be careful about trying soft styles that are actually difficult to maintain. After Taylor Swift started showing up at awards shows with the “casual side bun,” it became a wedding staple. However, while Taylor had top stylists spending all day to make that look seem “just done,” your bun will fall apart without a lot of maintenance. You’re much better off trying a simple style that you know will hold up.
For that real Independent Woman look, purchase a vintage gown at your local thrift shop. You can alter accordingly, and, if you’re a seamstress, add your own wrap or shawl. Vintage gowns work wonders with your mom’s jewelry, too, and make for a classic, yet original dress choice. Once you add gloves and a hat, you’ll be vintage perfection.
