When Roopa and Matt set out to plan their September wedding they wanted a wedding that reflected both of their backgrounds. Roopa is a born-and-bred New Yorker of South Indian descent, and Matt is Irish-Italian. Both of them are ardent Brooklynites to boot.
Writes Roopa, Our Hindu ceremony incorporated South Indian customs – many of which are different from the more commonly seen North Indian – and was held on the rooftop of the building that overlooked the Empire State Building, midtown Manhattan, and the Hudson River. The reception was held downstairs in the loft and had a modern, minimal feel – very different from most Indian weddings.

For the ceremony and cocktail hour, Roopa wore a magenta silk sari. Tradition usually calls for crimson, so the bride skewed toward the brighter side of red and went with magenta instead. Her groom wore a silk vashti (traditional South Indian mens sarong) purchased in Mumbai, a white linen shirt from Banana Republic, and leather flip flops. The real stunner was the brides purple wedding gown which came out for the reception. Thats right. Purple.
The silk gown was custom made for Roopa by Gina DeSilva for Adrienne’s in New York City. A white dress just wasn’t for me, she writes, I never envisioned myself wearing one.

Everything, right down to the decor, was inspired by the couples shared interests. Vases were fashioned from beakers and flasks, a nod towards the grooms occupation as a molecular biologist. The food and drinks paid homage to the couples backgrounds and their new life together in Brooklyn. Both South Indian and Italian food was served, and a special brew by Brooklyns own Sixpoint Craft Ales was created just for the couples big day. Roopa is a self-proclaimed serious baker, bot not crazy enough to make her own wedding cake. Instead, she made 600 miniature desserts that were put out on a late-night dessert bar! Amazing.

Special thanks to Roopa and Matt for sharing their wedding with us!
