Around here, anytime we see a man on bended knee, we have a pretty cursory response: Awwww. If he looks for a creative, new way to pop the question, we tend to love it even more.
So when we heard that prospective groom Matt Van Horn wanted to add “a modern twist [to] a classic proposal,” we were all over the idea—until we heard he broadcast it live for friends and family to see on social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare and Qik. Fox News reports that Matt, a business developer for social media site Digg, coordinated the “world’s geekiest proposal,” also sending out a “will you marry me” message on FourSquare afterward.
On Saturday the tech-savvy groom-to-be had help from a friend, who recorded the proposal on his iPhone and streamed it live via Qik while hiding at the proposal site. When Matt’s unsuspecting girlfriend arrived, he checked into the location using FourSquare, which disseminated the live video link to his friends and family on Facebook and Twitter.
With major publications like the Toronto Sun and social media blog Mashable calling Matt a geek and saying the proposal was a stunt, we have to wonder if the publicity was all worth it for the good-intended groom. But judging by the “yes” he got from girlfriend Lauren, perhaps all’s well that ends well.
So tell us, would you ever broadcast your proposal live for friends, family… and anyone else who’s following you on Facebook and Twitter? Take our poll and weigh in below!
